A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel to make it, which is why the same box that cools your Aurora home in July also heats it in November. The question in northern Illinois is what happens when the temperature really drops, and that is where the configuration matters.
Youngren's Heating & Cooling installs and services all three arrangements used in Fox Valley homes, so we can tell you which one actually suits your house instead of selling you the only one we stock.
Start with the service that matches your situation, or call and describe the symptoms.
Ice on the outdoor coil, a unit stuck in defrost, poor heating in cold weather, a reversing valve that will not switch, or a system running constantly. We diagnose it properly rather than just topping up refrigerant.
Includes the twice-yearly maintenance a heat pump actually needs.
Standard split systems, dual-fuel pairings with a gas furnace, and geothermal ground-source systems. Armstrong and Bryant equipment, sized and commissioned by our own technicians.
Replacements and first-time heat pump conversions both handled here.
Because a heat pump works in both seasons, it benefits more than most equipment from a plan. Ours cover the annual tune-up, priority scheduling and discounts on repairs and parts.
Essential and Premium options available.
The right choice depends on your existing ductwork, your lot, and how you want the system to behave in a deep freeze.
For homes that already have ductwork:
Built for Aurora's cold winters:
Ground-source heat exchange:
Some frost is normal in heating mode, a solid block of ice is not. That points to a defrost control, sensor or airflow fault. Book heat pump repair.
An air-source heat pump loses capacity as temperatures drop. A dual-fuel setup with a gas furnace backup is the usual fix in this climate.
Then a ducted heat pump is the wrong tool. A ductless mini-split is a heat pump too, just one that skips the duct system entirely.
Often the system has locked into backup electric heat. Worth a diagnostic visit before you assume the equipment is failing.

View All Service AreasYes, provided the system is set up for the climate. Standard split systems include backup heating elements in the indoor air handler for extreme cold days. For Aurora's coldest stretches many homeowners choose a hybrid dual-fuel system, which pairs the heat pump with a gas furnace backup and switches automatically to whichever source is more efficient at the time.
Twice a year, unlike a furnace or air conditioner. Because a heat pump runs in both heating and cooling mode it accumulates roughly double the runtime, so we recommend a cooling-mode service in spring and a heating-mode service in fall. Our maintenance plans are built around that schedule.
A light layer of frost in heating mode is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it on its own. A thick sheet of ice that does not melt, or a unit that never appears to run a defrost cycle, points to a defrost control, sensor or airflow problem and should be diagnosed before it damages the compressor.
